The WGBH on-air Auction, in June, is the largest community-driven event in New England. A live, televised shopping extravaganza that spans seven consecutive days and nights, The WGBH Auction has been an integral part of this region since 1966. More than 4,000 volunteers manage 6,000 items donated by 2,000 individuals and businesses, which generate more than 10,000 bids. St. Anthony of Padua was renown for his compassion for the poor of this world. People devoted to St. Anthony care for the poor by providing them with "bread" so that they may survive. The devotion to "St. Anthony's Bread" means that when a person prays for a special intention to St. Anthony, he or she will promise to give a "gift" (bread) to the poor or to some charitable cause. In order to commemorate this devotion and honor St. Anthony, the friars gave bread to all who came to the Shrine for the Vigil Masses, as a reminder of their common obligation to care for the poor.
